Reviews van Franz Keller Spätburgunder Kirchberg 2016
Keller's 2016 Kirchberg Spätburgunder GG offers a deep and spicy bouquet of ripe red fruit with some flowers, oak and caramel. This beautiful wine is silky in texture and very elegant on the palate, this is a generous and intense but refined, velvety Pinot with finesse and a stimulating salinity. Great purity and tension, but delicate, very good length. In comparison with Eichberg and Schlossberg GG this Pinot Noir is quite feminine and reserved. The wine has aged for 18 months in barrique barrels (65% new oak)
This wine comes from the Kirchberg vineyard. In this south / southwest-oriented vineyard you can feel the influence of the Belfry Gap particularly well. The bottom of the west-facing, more exposed parts of this plot has more gravel. In general it is always a bit cooler here, compared to Schlossberg and Eichberg. This Pinot Noir vineyard was planted in 1975 by Fritz Keller. Because of the clear, lime-rich volcanic gravel, the wine is delicate and fairly modest. The vineyards are located in the German region of Kaiserstuhl, which lies in the wine region of Baden . The producer of this wine is the authentic winery Franz Keller . Keller is a specialist in 'Burgundersorten', so the Pinots and Chardonnay. Especially the Spätburgunders (sometimes also referred to as Pinot Noir because they work with Burgundy clones) enjoy great international standing. If Magda van der Rijst thought it was her last year 'favorite producer of Spätburgunder from all over Germany', this year Lars Daniëls once again put a wine from Keller in his shortlist during the Grosse Gewächse tasting in Wiesbaden.
The Kaiserstuhl is the warmest and sunniest wine region in Germany and is characterized by volcanic soils covered with fertile high loess deposits that offer excellent wine-growing conditions for what they call the Burgundian sorts in Germany such as Weissburgunder, Grauburgunder, Chardonnay and Spätburgunder. Wijnhuis Keller has really beautiful vineyards, click here for an overview. At Keller only the best, carefully selected grapes from the best vineyards and plots are used: Schlossberg, Kirchberg, Eichberg, "Im Leh" and "Kähner". These wines mature in their best barrels and all have unique character, potential and finesse - truly unique grand crus!
2016 started wet and that water was very welcome, because 2015 had been so dry and replenishment of the water reserves in the soil was necessary. However, it rained a lot from mid-May to the end of June. This limited the bloom and gave an outbreak of mildew, among other things. A lot of work had to be done to save the harvest! Eventually the nice weather came back, so that the fruit that hung there could be brought in well. Because of all the hard work, the cooler year of 2016 has been saved. The wines are slightly slimmer, but fortunately fully ripe at Keller. Although the wines will be very drinkable from a young age, 2016 is even more than 2015, a year that can mature for a long time.
The wine goes very well with a nice dinner with, for example, filet mignon, stewed meat and ox cheeks. Also fits well with a cheese board.
